A tool that is transforming classroom everywhere is the interactive whiteboard. An interactive whiteboard is the newest form of a traditional dry erase board or flipchart. It allows teachers to display items that are displayed on the classroom computer. There are many different brand names, each bringing something different to the classroom. The brand name Activboard offers a wide variety of built-in tools , while the Mimio is better suited for transient classroom due to its portability.
An interactive whiteboard brings the world to the classroom. By using a USB or wireless connection to a classroom desktop, it opens up the limitless possibilities of the interactive websites, videos, and e-books. Teachers can use many pre-made flipcharts or design their own. Interactive white boards allow teacher and student to:
- Digital storytelling.
- Creating, viewing, and annotating student PowerPoint and multimedia presentations in real time.
- Showing streamed or downloaded videos.
- Using online map and satellite imagery to teach geography.
- Display artwork or online museum presentations.
- Demonstrating moviemaking techniques.
- Viewing and analyzing competitive sports and physical education activities.
- Teaching students how to conduct research on the Internet.
- Working collaboratively on writing and editing exercises, math lessons, and science experiments.
- Instructing the class on the use of a software program, keyboarding techniques, and other computer skills.

With all technology there are advantages and disadvantages. There are many advantages which include addressing the needs of a dynamic classroom, allows the students to become more interactive during instruction time, and increases a need to work collaboratively. The most obvious disadvantage is price. Interactive boards are more expensive due to the expense of the board, projector, software license, and installation. They are a fixed height; the surface of the board can be damaged. They require the classroom to be equipped with a computer.
Interactive classroom can be used in many different setting, not just the classroom. They can be used in the board room, training rooms, professional sports coaching, and broadcasting studios.
You can research each individual brand by visiting the corporate website.
As a future teacher and product of a technological world, I am an avid enthusiast of the idea that each classroom can be equipped with an interactive smart board. I also feel the classroom needs to be equipped with an effective teacher than can utilize the technology. The board can broaden the background knowledge of each child by bringing the world to the classroom. It can allow the teacher to better teach a classroom of diverse learners. The hardware and software maybe have an expensive price tag, but can you put a price on a child’s education?
