The technology I would introduce to the classroom is Twitter. I would introduce this technology for the parents who may be too busy to make it to face to face conferences. It is also a good resource for homework help at night or to send short messages to parents about events in the classroom, such as planned parties or activities to introduce a unit. Teachers may also send announcments without going through the trouble of having to type out a rough draft, look for errors in typing, editing, typing up a final draft, and finally sending it off to the parent. This way the line of communication is open and the conversation on the internet is much like a normal face to face conversation.
The biggest advantage I find to twitter is being able to involve those parents who may have a demading job and do not have the time to help their child with homework or make their presence known at conferences. Any comments needed to be made on the child's progression or struggle can be made known through twitter and the parent can ask any questions they have about their child. It would also illiminate any embarrassing conversation moments that may take place in a face to face meeting. Another advantage is if parents cannot help their child with homework twitter is set up much like instant messeger and the student can ask the teacher any question during a certain amount of time. It is also a way to keep a daily update of all the lessons and events going on in the class. Teachers may also update a supply list over the internet of all the things needed for a particular lesson in the classroom.
The biggest disadavantage to twitter i can think of is if the parent cannot make the time set up by the teacher to log on to twitter than the technology is useless because questions will not be answered. The parents and teachers may rely too much on the communication and the personal relationship between parent and teacher would be illiminated making the classroom impersonal. The idea may also take some convincing because some parents do not trust the content on the internet, which is understandable.
The main audience for this technology would be the parents.
I think it is a good idea for communication with parents and I think IM is a good idea too as jobs become more demanding on parents, but the fact that anyone can get on the internet might be a problem for the student.
