DIBELS!!

What is it??
DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Literacy Skills) In my field experience I became familiar with a technology tool called DIBELS. It is a short (one minute) measure of a student's fluency. DIBELS can also measure phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, comprehension, and vocabulary. It is used in determining a student's current status where emergent literacy skills are concerned.
How can it be used?
DIBELS can be used by having each student read aloud individually for one minute, while you follow along on the DIBELS machine (the books coincide with the text in the tool.) As the student reads, you highlight misread words, or unknown words, and at the end, the tool calculates the student's level based on the number of words read correctly in the given minute.
Advantages
1. it is proven a reliable indicator of the the student's current status
2. gives valid information to the individuals education
3. predicts a student's future profiviency in order to plan accordingly

Disadvantages
1. can be rushed, so the students will not read as fluently as possible
2. students may not get necessary comprehension from text because of quick nature
3. can be administered to everyone at once (time consuming)

Audience
This tool is designed to measure the emergent literacy level of students ranging anywhere from kindergarten to the sixth grade. There is a different DIBELS program for each grade level and the text involved is based on the general level of that age group. There are different texts available for different reading levels for each grade.

My Opinion

As I said before, DIBELS is a program that I became very familiar with during my field experience. It is a tool that I thought was very useful to the future success of students. I think that this is a very good way to determine where a student stands and how we should plan for them as individuals to better their reading abilities. Most reading evaluations are not fun for students and DIBELS allows for a little bit of competetion, and that makes reading exciting for them. It is important to keep kids interested in reading and DIBELS is a great way to do so. Implementing this tool allowed me to not only see the validity of the tool but also the enjoyment it provided for the students. I recommend this technology tool for all current and future teachers to use in their classroom so that they can be aware of where each individual stands with emergent literacy skills.
