MimioClassroom consists of Teach, View, Vote, Capture, Pad, and Studio. Each of these tools can be used individually, but are designed to work together. For Teach, you just attach a compact bar to your existing whiteboard, and your whiteboard becomes linked to your computer. This makes it possible to access everything on your computer from your whiteboard. Vote streamlines student assessment with the use of individual voting tools. Capture is an ink recording system that attaches to your dry-erase markers and saves whatever information you write on the whiteboard into your computer. Capture and Pad are also innovative parts of this family of tools which are all incorporated into Studio.
There are several advantages to MimioClassroom. The technology streamlines classroom instructional time. Instead of having students spend time taking notes, Mimio does this for them and saves all information and notes into a computer. The technology is engaging. Students will take interest in participating in components like Vote where they get to voice their opinion on a matter. Studio is compatible with Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat and immediately makes these programs interactive with your existing whiteboard. The Mimio website offers many lesson plans that are compatible with Mimio technologies and also has an online interactive teaching community where you as a teacher can chat and share experiences with your MimioClassroom.
There are also some disadvantages to MimioClassroom. Like most new technologies, the cost is very high, especially if you do not qualify for an educator discount. It is not affordable on a teacher's budget as one stylus marker alone is about $50. Another disadvantage is the elimination of note-taking. Students may not learn as much with this technology as they might if they were actively taking notes as normal.
I think that Mimio Interactive Teaching Technologies are very useful in the classroom setting. While there are some disadvantages, I feel that the advantages greatly outweigh them. If you or your school could afford the technology, I would recommend the investment. I like the way you can link your existing whiteboard to your computer without the need for an expensive smartboard. I also think the website containing Mimio specific lesson plans is very useful. I do feel that it is important to not rely too heavily on technology so that students will not begin to rely on it too much. One component I would be weary of is the MimioVote assessment tool. This makes it easy for students and teachers alike to get lazy about assessment. Overall I think Mimio is a great tool for the classroom.
