What is the tool?
Lego Mindstorms is a line of programmable robotics/construction toys that links with computer software to control the robot. The pieces come in a box ready to be put together, just like normal legos but they create a robot. The robot contains two touch sensors and also light, sound and distance sensors.
How can it be used?
The Mindstorm can be used as a toy or for educational purposes. If you want to use this for education you can get a model called Lego Mindstorms for School. The only difference between the two robots is the software that goes along with it. The Lego Mindstorm is used by many different age groups. They encourage programmers to share and communicate with others about their personal robots in a form like wiki to learn from one another.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of this tool?
I like how with the Lego Mindstorm is it something personal you create and work on building. Just because some might have the same pieces as others not everyone is going to have the same thing. It also gives a fun and engaging way for students to learn. Students at all ages get to hands on build, design, and control their own robots. A problem I could see occurring would be if a teacher is not that familiar with the product and there becomes a technical problem with the robot, what do you do? But there is an online IT technical support page. I also liked how they encourage you to blog and post ideas about your own to learn and share with others.
Where can we learn more about this tool?
