The iPad, which was introduced earlier this year is a new product that will give both teachers and students new and exciting opportunities in the classroom. The possibilities for using the iPad in schools seem almost endless. Although they do cost a considerable amount of money, they reduce the need for paper products in the classroom. Rather than having hardcopy text books for students, copies can be loaded onto the iPad. Students can take their books wherever they go.
The iPad will allow students to collaborate wirelessly with each other from any wireless hotspot, whether it be at home, school, or at the local fast-food restaurant. Teachers are able to provide almost instant feedback on electronically submitted assignments and work closely with students at all levels of education. Students can work on class wikis that serve as a portfolio for their classes, or blog about topics that are of interest to them and their academic careers.
Their are several advantages to using iPads in the classroom. They are cheaper and more portable than many laptops, which school systems should take into account. However, the capabilities that they possess are not quite up to the level of a standard laptop. They are unable to print and currently are not flash capable. More criticism can be found here. A major concern for teachers and school systems will be how to keep students safe when the internet is always at their fingertips. Unfortunately this is a problem that technology brings with it and teachers must educate their students as to proper internet safety and etiquette.
The iPad is a great tool for students in high schools. Because of the cost and delicate nature of the item, it might not be cost effective to use them in lower grades. Overall, the iPad will augment classrooms in a positive and should be considered for use in classrooms across America.
