What is the tool?
iPad is a tablet computer designed by Apple, which puts an interactive internet in the palm of your hands with versatility that provides wonderful learning experiences or just great fun like games, movies and e-books. It has a 30-pin connector that attaches the iPad to computers, and it uses Bluetooth and Enhanced Data Rate technologies for fast wireless access up to 3 Mbps. The size, about ten inches, makes it easy to travel with. The multi-touch screen handles input well and it has a nice speaker system. Beginner computer users will appreciate how user friendly the device is. It has vivid and beautiful colors on the screen and there is a control for brightness, which is very nice when you are reading a book.
How can it be used?
It can be used for learning or entertainment purposes. There is a calendar that allows a full month view and interaction with your schedule. I went into an Apple store and tried one out. It accesses works of art and their artists, loads of books, music including different instruments that you can play. I tried the piano and it was pretty fun. It also has lots of games to play or movies to buy or watch. It has You-tube, which can access lots of information for learning and researching, or you can watch their videos. I like their music videos and visit there often using my pc.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of this tool?
An advantage of this device is the size of it. It fits in the palm of your hand, which makes it easy to take to school, work, or to go on vacation. It is better for playing games than iPhone, since the screen is larger and game easier to maneuver. You can find just about any book to read, instantly, and create your own library. It gives the consumer convenience and versatility in a number of areas. A disadvantage of this device is the battery that runs it. It is a 25-watt-hour lithium-polymer, which is not designed to be user-replaceable. All batteries wear out eventually, like laptops, and their batteries are designed to be replaced so you do not have to buy another laptop. Not so with the iPad. You pay at least $500.00 for it plus $100.00 for the Apple care protection plan that lasts two years. If anything happens to the battery, the device will be replaced. So you have to insure your iPad in case the battery goes out, since it can not be replaced. The protection costs $100.00 and only lasts 2 years. Most things that go wrong with electronics happen after 2 years. I was very dissatisfied with this information when a man form the Apple store in Alpharetta tried to explain it to me. Their number is 770-754-3992 for anyone who wants clarification on this somewhat secret battery money gimmick. Also, it does not have a USB port or SD card reader for transferring photos and videos. You have to buy it extra, which after paying $500.00 is cheap on Apple’s part. There is no webcam present that would have allowed people to use iChat or Skype video for conversations. This is a pity considering the nice size of the device.
Who is the audience for this tool?
All ages will enjoy this device. The very young will benefit from hearing music or having a story read to them. Gamers will enjoy it for the size and maneuverability of the games that are available to play, and for the nice graphics. iPad has games from places like Gameloft and Electronic Arts. Teachers will enjoy this device for the internet access available for students to use in a small package, and for all the wonderful books that can be used to enhance lessons through iBooks. People who love music and movies will appreciate iTunes. You can find your favorite artists and hear samples of their music, which you can also buy. You can also buy or rent hit movies.

What is your opinion on the usefulness of this tool?
I believe there are a lot of nice bells and whistles to this device, and it could be a lot of fun to use. It has the ability to bring wonderful storehouses of knowledge to the user, but I sure do not have an extra $500.00 available for my future classroom, especially since there is an issue about the availability of a battery that does not end up costing more than the original price of the iPad.
