GPS Devices in the Classroom

/ On : 21.15/ Thank you for visiting my small blog here. If you wanted to discuss or have the question around this article, please contact me e-mail at herdiansyah hamzah@yahoo.com.

What is the tool?

A GPS is a Global Positioning System that uses satellites and computers to determine latitude and longitude of a receiver by computing time differences and signals. It was originally created my the Department o Defense for navigational purposes, but is now also used as a timing tool. When the GPS first came out it could be accurate down to a few meters. Now they have the systems accurate to the centimeter.

Use?
What people usually use it for is to tell them where they are, how to get somewhere, or different ways to get there. Many people use these systems when they are traveling or in a different city, but they are also used for much more. With out the satellites and GPS technology our military would not be what it is. Police officers, fire-fighters, and other everyday heroes depend on this
system as well.
Advantages?
They are a great way for students to relate to the real world.

There are many activities that can be done with the GPS that could include other subjects.

Students could go on scavenger hunts around the playground or yard at the school and learn coordinates.

It is also a great way to teach latitude and longitude.
If they are ever lost they will be able to use a GPS and either help them find their way or find help.

Stay at school field trips could be created where they have to look up coordinates and plan a trip.

Disadvantages?
Students may become dependent on this device.

They may not learn how to use coordinates and just take the easy way out.

Students may abuse the privallage of being able to use one.

They can be very expensive and could easily get broken.

My Opinion
My opinion with GPS devices is the same that it is with any technology in the classroom: It is a great device for the classrooms, as long as they are not being abused. Teachers still need to teach the class and not become so dependent on technology. I think that GPS devices would be a great asset to schools, especially in math and science, as long as they are the tool for teaching and not doing it for the teacher. I think that this would be especially amazing in social studies for "world trips".
