Google Earth in the Classroom
Anything with “Google” associated with it such as “google books” or “google images” has become so common in tools we use for daily life, as well as education. Google Earth is an extremely special tool that can be used to bring life to a classroom and go beyond simple maps on a page. By using Google Earth in a Geography or History classroom, which is my area, the teacher can bring places that you read about right in front of the students’ eyes to allow them to become more invested and related to what they’re learning about. It’s very exciting!
Like all internet tools, Google Earth has its advantages and disadvantages. Some of its advantages are that it can be used to show the students far away lands as they are now compared to how they were then. It can also show and help teach the concept of latitude and longitude in Geography classes. Furthermore, Google Earth is free! Google Earth’s biggest disadvantage is that the images they put out are not exactly present day, rather they can be images that were taken from a satellite possibly months or even a couple of years before- this is probably why they are able to keep it free to use. The only other disadvantage is that sometimes the images are not perfectly clear but that is expected and you are still able to get a great deal of good image.
The audience spectrum for this tool is wide. Google Earth is available to the world, or any one with internet access; however, for my purposes of teaching, the audience would be high school History or Geography students. Also, if the students are instructed to present using this tool, the audience could expand to other students, other faculty members, and could even go back to the world wide web as some may post a presentation on the internet.
There are many opportunities offered online to learn more about this particular tool. One of those would be to visit their actual web site and the online tour they offer: Google Earth Tour Also, you can watch a video on an introduction to Google Earth Video Tutorial
The usefulness of Google Earth is substantial. It can not only help teachers teach and open up a whole new world to students, but it also is used by news channels to show where certain events have happened, it can be used to find where your family is from when doing genealogy , it can be simply used for directions, and much much more!
