I found this wonderful tool with the Microsoft Corporation online. Called MapPoint, it is a program that can incorporate electronic maps into other Microsoft Office programs. They also have features that can be used online, such as mapping different routes and using icons to mark different locations for different reasons. These maps can be used in a variety of ways; from geography lessons to history lessons, this tool would be a wonderful addition to any class.
One of the tools advantages is that it is versatile. Also, it can be integrated into any lesson plan that involves locations. An elementary class can map a school field trip and decide what to take in accordance with the amount of time it will take and what they will be passing on the way. A middle school class can use the program to trace the settlement of the west. A high school class can use it to research different marketing aspects of the world. The potential uses are numerous.
Some disadvantages are that it is not free, and that it will take a while to get used to. Some of its features are uncommon to other Microsoft Office programs, which makes it unfamiliar to new users. The teacher would have to spend time with it and learn it well in advance to trying to use it in a lesson.
In my opinion, this program is great and extremely useful. It will make learning and teaching fun!
More information about this program can be found at Microsoft Learning Suite. Also, to learn more about how it can be integrated into more subjects, such as Math, using MapPoint and Excel together, this page is useful.
