Audience:
Teachers can use this site for demonstrations, printouts, and assessments. They can also purchase educational videos. Many of the videos are from actual Discovery Channel shows, such as, How It's Made and Planet Earth. There are many helpful tools within Discovery Education like the Puzzlemaker. There are also teacher forums and blogs available, as well as lesson plans.
Students can also use this site for homework assistance. There are links to help in math, social studies, literature, foreign languages, and more. They can also use the tools like Puzzlemaker to test their own skills. Students can also participate in competition.
Advantages:
- This site has links and tools for most every subject
- Students can access the site for assistance when they are away from school.
- Teachers can make and print their own assignments with the available tools
- Schools can apply for giveaways, such as computer labs
- The videos have to be purchased.
- From what I have noticed, the site is mainly for students up to 8th grade. Limited use for high scool.
My Opinion :
I really feel this site has many useful tools and links. I actually used Puzzlemaker to make a math square and was pleased with the results. I watch Discovery Channel on a regular basis and think that many of the shows are great for the classroom. It is great that these are made available to teachers. This site can help students relate school to real life situations.
