What is a SMARTBoard?
A SMARTBoard is an interactive whiteboard system that can be used in many different environments and for many different purposes. This tool combines the simplicity of a normal whiteboard and the power of a computer. This product comes in several different models, ranging from the 685ix model to the V280 model that is specified and set apart for educators. Along with the SMARTBoard itself, pen-like instruments and an eraser are located on the tray below the board. This application would allow someone like a teacher to write notes on the board or pull up a website and underline/highlight key words on the web page for all to see.
How can a SMARTBoard be used?
SMARTBoards are very innovative and user-friendly tools. With many different models being made available, SMARTBoards can be used by business executives, teachers in classrooms of all ages, and other environments that would deem technology necessary and appropriate. For example, if an executive were to give a big proposal about an upcoming merger with another company, a SMARTBoard would allow said executive the chance to display their work and indicate specific points with the assistance of the pens located on the tray below the board. From a teacher's standpoint, a SMARTBoard could prove to be very helpful and interactive for the students in the class. For instance, if you teach a math class and want your students to complete problems on the board, you could simply allow the students to come up to the SMARTBoard and complete the work there rather than on a traditional whiteboard or chalkboard. Giving students the opportunity to utilize technology often gives them license over a portion of their education, an experience that can be quite impressive and empowering.
What are the advantages/disadvantages to using a SMARTBoard?
SMARTBoards are very useful and practical tools to implement into any working environment where technology can be used. One advantage to using the tool is that it allows you to utilize technology in a fairly user-friendly manner. I have used a SMARTBoard in several different educational environments and I always find it very easy to navigate. This tool is not only easy to use but it allows you to show different medias (i.e. movie (DVDs and VHS, if available), Internet web pages, etc.) as long as a projector is mounted or made available somewhere in the room. I have seen many movies in different college classes and the SMARTBoard has made it possible and easier than ever before. However, while these boards have advantages, they also have disadvantages. One disadvantage about the SMARTBoards is that they are not always efficient and reliable. While they are very easy to use and work, the SMARTBoards tend to not properly work on a pretty regular basis. I have seen issues such as lack of connection to the Internet and inability to use applications (i.e. pens and eraser). Also, this tool does cost quite a bit to own, often making it difficult for certain school systems to purchase this kind of technology.
Who is the audience for SMARTBoards?
There are several appropriate audiences for the SMARTBoard. The audiences could include teachers, administrators, business executives, students, and anyone else who has the know-how and desire to learn about the tool and properly use it. Since I have used this tool both as a teacher and a student, I can attest to the fact that the tool can be used by and is appropriate for at least those two groups.

What is your opinion on the usefulness of SMARTBoards?
Overall, I believe that the SMARTBoards are very useful and creative to use in any classroom environment. They provide a clear and concise way to connect technology to learning in the classroom. If I were to use a SMARTBoard in my class, I would make sure to show and train my student in using this helpful tool. While I as the teacher will use it, I would like my students to also use it and implement it into their education.
