Ediscio is a free online flashcard tool for teachers and students. Ediscio allows users to individually and collaboratively create, store, and share flashcards. Teachers can create flashcards for their students, or assign vocabulary that students must use to create flashcards. Students can create their own flashcards or access flashcards created and stored by other users.
Ediscio allows different text formatting, including tables and formulas, users can upload pictures, MP3s, and You Tube Videos to flashcards. Completed flashcards can be organized and stored in online card boxes or folders; flashcards can also be printed, imported, and exported as CSV, XLS, and Html.
Ediscio has some extra features that may interest some users: There is a personal Newsfeed available and a social networking component that allows users to keep up with other members in learning groups. Ediscio also has a mobile version that can be accessed through mobile phones, Blackberry’s, IPhones, and the IPod Touch.
Creating Flashcards:
Ediscio is very easy to use. Access is free, but users do need to create an account. Teachers can make accounts for their classes. Passwords are required. To create flashcards, users simply click on New Card box, give the card box a name, and then follow the instructions on the screen beginning with clicking Create.
The process is intuitive and most users could probably figure it out without even looking at the instructions. But if a user does need help, there is an easy to use Instructions tab with screen shots to show the way.

Teaching with Ediscio:
Teachers who create flashcards for a class must first create a class page. Students who log in to Ediscio will then go to that class page to access the card box. This page will have information for the student about which cards are assigned, how they are to be studied, and how often. It also includes a class discussion board so that students can work collaboratively. As student work on the cards, the page includes statistical information about individual and class progress.
Classes can easily be created and administered. Teachers get a history of all activities in the card boxes which have been assigned to the students. Also as students in the class use the flash cards, Ediscio keeps track of each Known and Not Known event so a teacher gets a cumulative score for the class. Ediscio also sorts the words by Most Difficult to Least Difficult.
Learning with Ediscio:
To learn with the flashcards, a user needs to click on the Learn tab, choose a card box, and then choose a Learning Method. Students can learn by schedule, meaning a certain number of flashcards at a time or per day. Alternatively, Ediscio can sort the cards by least viewed, most difficult, arbitrarily, or most selected first. It can also ask the question and the user give the answer, or tell the answer and have the user ask the question.
At the end of the learning process a user’s learning needs are analyzed and illustrated in a circle graph, bar graph, or as a “cloud” of words, with the words the user needs to work on being the largest words in the cloud.
What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Ediscio:
Overall, this is a good tool. It does a lot more than I expected. I used Ediscio to make flash cards for my classes this semester. I found it very easy to use. I am a person who types my notes and the writes out note cards, so typing my notes into Ediscio saved me the step of also having to recreate them as note cards. I liked being able to work through the notes in a variety of ways, this kept the process of studying from becoming tedious. I also think the graphic feedback was motivating, and somehow reassuring as well.
I think the Ediscio mobile service would be wonderful to use because I spend a lot of time waiting in the car for my children and it would be very efficient to be able to use that wasted time by studying with my phone. Unfortunately, I don’t have a phone that can access this service.

If Ediscio has a downside, it’s that the cards print out as a page, rather than the typical 3x5 flashcard with a front and a back. I was hoping for that feature because a lot of teachers still expect flashcards to be turned in using that format and Ediscio would not be the program to use if that is your requirement. (Please note in the first comment below, that the creator actually read this critique and added this 3x5 card print option to Ediscio. Wow! So now Ediscio is perfect! I am so impressed!)
