How am I going to help a child, whether my own or my student, get a good foundation in reading? Do I have the right tools and resources to keep the child interested? What can I do for the child who is struggling with reading?
These are some very important and tough questions. Questions, that parents and teachers need to think about when a child is young. The tool that I am going to introduce you to is just the thing to aid you in finding your answers. What is the tool you ask? It is an projectl website of Reading Rocket.
Now, I am sure you are wondering why this website is useful in finding aid. The tool is perfect for that, because of what it specializes in. Reading rocket specializes in helping teach reading to young children. The site has a main page with up-to-date news. Then even more, the site can be navigated through tabs on the top of the site page. Along the left side there are quick links to most commonly visitied sites. The front page has multiple reading news stories, similar to blog format.
Time to be more specific. The tabs on the top of the page are divided into audiences. The audience selections are: Parents, Teachers, Principals, Librarians, and Other Professionals; Schools Psychologists, School Pathologists, Preschool and Childcare, and lastly PBS Stations. The site has a sister site that focuses in reading complications due to speaking Espanol. The quick links on the left side include: ABC's of Teaching Reading, Classroom Strategies, Helping Struggling Students, Topic's A-Z, Glossary, Index. Then even more links that have reading guides, reading calenders, children book ideas, blogs, etc.
So basically this site has it all. It is a wonderful tool for those working with kids and reading. The disadvantages I find is that there is nothing on the site that the kids can do. No games or anything offered by Reading Rocket. The site also offers a plethera of reading programs and books, news and tips, but it doesn't always have credible resources. The postings and information shared is not necessarily going to work for you as a teacher. Finally the site only focuses on young readers. The advantages are amazing, remembering if you want to work with young kids. So many tools and resources just a click away.
In my opinion, as a future special education major, believe that this sight can be very useful. However, it can only be very useful for working with younger graders, or readers with a low reading level. The site has awsome resources for both sides of the child's life, the education system and home. It is definitely a site worth checking out.
