What is EEBO?
EEBO is a huge online database of virtually EVERY written, published work in English history. It is basically every written document in English history all in one place.
How can we use EEBO?
EEBO is especially useful to historians. We can use this database, as it provides an immense amount of contemporary sources on nearly any topic. It can also be used by students in order to do their own research for various assignments.
Advantages of EEBO?
The most obvious advantage is the number of sources available. There are hundreds of thousands of works on a variety of topics. If you can't find it here, it probably doesn't exist. Another advantage is that these resources are free to the public and do not require special access.
Disadvantages of EEBO?
I think the main disadvantage of EEBO is also the amount of available information. While there is plenty out there, it makes the process of narrowing down what you are looking for very tedious. To the inexperienced researcher, this can be a problem.
The audience?
In terms of the classroom, the students and teachers would be the main audience. While historians use this for primary sources, students can use it in the same way when doing research for their own assignments.
My opinion of EEBO...
I think EEBO is a neat tool for the student and the historian. I found out about in a history class I am taking and it proved to be a great resource for me. However, it is very tedious work to find exactly what you're looking for. Even so, it is a great tool because research isn't supposed to be easy!
