What is the tool?

Scholastic is a website that is beneficial to teachers, parents, and students. The motto of this website is “helping children around the world to read and learn.” The motto summarizes what the site does. The teacher’s section of the website is divided into three smaller sections: teaching resources, student activities, and books and authors. The teaching resources section offers over 10,000 lesson ideas. It also has a classroom solutions section and printables/mini books that are available for teacher use. The student activities section contains online activities and opportunities for interactive learning. The books and authors section contains information about various children’s books and their authors that may be useful to teachers. Each of the sections can be explored by grade and subject, which makes for easier browsing. The section for parents includes smaller sections such as school and learning, books and reading, activities, and family life. There is also a family playground which offers games, stories, videos, and printables that the child and the parents can explore together. The section for kids includes games and other fun stuff that children will enjoy, although much of it is very educational. Additionally, there is a section for administrators and librarians.

How can it be used?

This website can be used by teachers to incorporate technology into lessons. Personally, I have used the Scholastic website with my lessons. The children loved the interactive activities and they were able to learn concepts in a new and fun way. Most of the activities are more like games, but they reinforce educational concepts. The site can also be used by parents to help their children at home, and by the children themselves to play educational, fun games.

What are the advantages of this tool?

There are many advantages to Scholastic.com. The first advantage is that almost all of the resources are free. There is no need to sign up for anything or get roped into paying a yearly fee for the resources. Additionally, the resources are fun and entertaining for the children, yet educational.

What are the disadvantages of this tool?

The only disadvantage I could find at this website is that some of the printables and mini books are not free. Some require you to subscribe before you can print.

Who is the audience for this tool?

The audience for this tool is teachers, parents, and students. There are resources for teachers grades Pre-K through 12. There are also games and activities for students grades Pre-K through 12.

What is your opinion on the usefulness of this tool?

I believe this tool is very useful. The resources enhance the students’ learning and add to the lessons in the classroom. I would recommend this tool to teachers in all grade levels. It is also a great resource for parents to help their children outside of school. Children will enjoy it because the games are fun and educational.
