Epals
What is the tool?
The really neat tool I have researched is Epals. Epals is a global community of connected classrooms that allows students to communicate with other students from different classrooms around the world. Students can communicate through email and blogs. Epals are safe and protected and require no cost. The website makes it really easy to sign up and match a classroom with yours.
How can it be used?
Epals can be used through email or blog. Students are able to connect with other students across the world. For example, if the students are learning about a natural disaster, the classroom can connect with students living in that area. Then students are able to talk to someone who is actually experiencing the disaster. This makes learning more interesting to students and feels more real.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of this tool?
The advantage of using Epals is that it allows students to actually connect with what they are learning about. It's hard to teach students about a different culture without allowing them to experience it in some way. Epals is a great way to have students connect with someone from that culture and allow that experience to teach them the most.
The only disadvantage that I could see would be that Epals are available at home as well. At school, the teacher can monitor what is being blogged or emailed. Although the site is protected, students may try to write something inappropriate or something out of context. I would make sure that my students only used Epals at school during a selected time.

The audience for this tool would be focused on primary-secondary students. Teachers and administrators can use this website to help their students grow.
