Beyond Question is an up-and-coming computer software program that allows teachers to know what their students are thinking. No, really. This tool is used in the classroom to help teachers know which students are "getting" the lesson and which aren't. Keep reading.


It works like this: each student in class gets his or her own remote control. The teacher programs a series of questions into the software, and each student answers each of the questions during the lesson. Students are assured anonymity because teachers assign numbers to students' remote controls that only the teacher knows.

Teachers have the option of pre-programming questions into the software for tomorrow's class or typing in questions as she goes along during teaching. Either way, students' answers appear on the teacher's computer screen, thereby letting the teacher know how class is going. Beyond Question is a way to turn any classroom into an interactive environment that gives each student in class his or her own voice. Any classroom in grades K-12 would qualify as an appropriate and lucky audience for Beyond Question.

Advantages of Beyond Question are that teachers get instant feedback about student learning and achievement. In turn, students get instant feedback about their progress. Instant feedback is invaluable for teachers because if a teacher sees that the majority of students miss a particular question, she can review material with students so that no student gets left in the dark.

I hope to give Beyond Question a try in my classroom when I begin teaching. It sounds like a great system to get all students involved in class. It seems especially promising for those students who don't like to answer questions out loud. Beyond Question has the potential to ensure that no student in class falls through the cracks.
