The Indigo Learning System

/ On : 13.19/ Thank you for visiting my small blog here. If you wanted to discuss or have the question around this article, please contact me e-mail at herdiansyah hamzah@yahoo.com.
In your classroom, is there a computer for every student?

There could be!

The Indigo Learning System is a combination student-response system and low-cost handheld computer. It is a newly developed network learning system made specifically for assessment and instruction. In 2007, its pilot project was initiated in several public schools located in Hawaii and Atlanta, Georgia. The Indigo Learning System’s popularity quickly spread through the educational technology community winning the Award of Excellence in 2007 from Technology & Learning, highlighting its abilities and affordability.

What does Indigo do?

Assessement:
Teachers can either create their own assessments or utilize the built-in test question bank that contains over 10,000 questions (multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank and essay questions). And, the best thing about the test bank is that it is aligned to state-specific educational standards! Plus, it provides instant feedback for educators to guide classroom decisions and ensure that students achieve success.

Instuction:
Teachers can also instruct through the handhelds. Teachers can upload content (e.g. test-prep materials, quizzes, and images) from almost any electronic source (e.g. PDF, Word, the Web, Excel, a scanner). Teachers can search and send any RSS podcast and send it to the student handhelds. Students can then listen to the podcasts using the Indigo handheld’s built-in speaker or headphones. In addition, students can visit any teacher-allowed web domain (e.g., Google, Dictionary.com, Wikipedia) from their Indigo handhelds right at their desk. No sharing of desktop computers or lessons taking days to finish because of lack of technology!
Teachers can:
· Print out the whole class or individual student responses (even the essays).
· Measure individual and class mastery against state standards.
· Instantly monitor the screens of the entire class or an individual student.
· Send messages to the entire class or individual students.

Students can:
· Work at their own pace.
· Review their answers.
· Review their grades and previous assignments.
· Listen privately to teacher approved podcasts.
· Search teacher approved websites.

And it gets better!

Besides being low-cost and aligned to state-specific educational standards, there is the:

This educational forum allows members to share ideas, suggestions, assignments, and even lesson plans!
