Scratch! an exciting tool for every classroom!

/ On : 08.44/ Thank you for visiting my small blog here. If you wanted to discuss or have the question around this article, please contact me e-mail at herdiansyah hamzah@yahoo.com.
Scratch is interactive software that challenges students by allowing them to create stories, animations, games and more that are interactive thus, intriguing for the student!

Scratch itself is designed mainly for ages 8-16. It is a perfect tool for those teaching upper elementary grades all the way through those in high school.
For educators I recommend that they visit the programs website. From here one is able to watch various tutorial video and/ or download pdf formats that are available for download.

I feel that this technology will be one of the growing tools within the classroom. A simple poster board presentation is not suffice for children any more. With technology being associated in every other aspect of their life, should education not go along with the program!? I fell in love with this technology because it allows for such creativity and expression from the child. It allows the student’s knowledge to be expressed in his or her own unique way. With such vast tutorials and assistance, it is also easy for any teacher to learn how to use this impressive tool.

The website gives quotes from actual users of this technology all praise its uniqueness!

*Children exclaim: "I enjoy designing and programming games and animations with other kids, because different people have different skills, and when you work together, you can build a much better project than you can alone."- Diana, age 13

*Parents exclaim: My two children were immediately hooked. Scratch allows kids to program by 'stacking' commands like LEGO blocks. Instead of reactively playing video games -- now they can create them! They are learning programming and logic flows without knowing it. The boys learned about random number generators and they learned about XY axes. If I sat them down to go over these concepts, there would have been eye-rolling and moaning. But if it helps them make their game work better -- it takes a minute to explain and off they go using their newly-learned concepts."- Lucinda, parent

*Teachers exclaim:
"There is a buzz in the room when the kids get going on Scratch projects. Students set design goals for their projects and problem-solve to fix program bugs. They collaborate, cooperate, co-teach. They appreciate the power that Scratch gives them to create their own versions of games and animations." - Karen R., teacher.

With such support from not only educators, but student and parents alike, this tool in obviously one to learn and use in the classroom!

Here is an example of a child's impressive work when given the topic of "Earth Conservation!"
