Text-to-Speech software comes in many brands and varieties, but as it grows in popularity you have more options to download it cheaper and in some cases for free. Most are very user friendly and only require that you upload a document or highlight text, and then it will read the sentences out loud exactly as they are written…some with punctuation, voice inflections and all!
Teachers and parents alike can benefit from this software and the readings can be saved to an mp3 or CD! Parents, you can help your child get extra practice reading and listening at home! Adobe Reader even has an option that began with Adobe 7.0 for “Read Out Loud”!
Teachers can use the text-to-speech software to read assignments, quizzes, or tests to students who have trouble reading. Those students who have trouble with reading comprehension or writing fluency can also use it while they type a paper to make sure they are typing exactly what they mean to say. I think this would be great for students who have trouble with reading fluency. They will have increased exposure to someone reading text out loud to make the connection to writing and speaking. If you have a new student who doesn’t speak or write English well they can use the software when they need to do a lot of reading or typing to help them proofread. If you have a student that can’t see very well the software could read his assignments to him and then he could respond verbally in a recording! There are so many possibilities for the use of this software! I think it’s wonderful!
